West Kentucky Community and Technical College was among 27 institutions whose business school or programs were recently awarded accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) . Allison McGullion, business administration program coordinator at WKCTC, accepted ACBSP’s certificate of initial accreditation during the 2013 ACBSP Annual Conference in Salt Lake City.
“ACBSP accreditation allows the Business Administration Program to distinguish itself from others by demonstrating a higher level of quality and educational standards. This accreditation gives not only our students a competitive advantage but also our college and community,” said McGullion. “Accreditation also provides the Business Administration faculty with many opportunities for leadership and professional development. The entire ACBSP organization including its staff and member schools share WKCTC’s commitment to continuous improvement.”
Douglas G. Viehland, executive director of ACBSP, spoke of the accomplishment of the member institutions: "These institutions have shown their commitment to teaching excellence by their participation in the accreditation process and their achievement of accreditation. ACBSP is proud to assist these schools and programs in their commitment to quality business programs. We recognize their educational practices that contribute to the continuous improvement of business education."
For institutions that achieve accreditation for their business schools and programs, this attainment certifies that the teaching and learning processes within that institution meet the rigorous educational standards established by ACBSP. The ratification of accreditation by ACBSP covers a 10-year period at which time an institution must reaffirm its quality by preparing a self-study and having another site visit. During the accreditation period, business programs are required to maintain the high quality standards of ACBSP.
McGuillion said WKCTC has a robust offering of business programs, with a mission to provide the foundation to prepare students for today’s rapidly changing business world. Their fundamentals courses in management, marketing, economics, and accounting prepare students for entry level positions in management, real estate, and accounting. Offering live, accelerated, and online instruction in topics ranging from small business management, leadership, and global markets, there is something for everyone including those students who wish to continue on to a four-year institution to obtain a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration.
WKCTC has transfer agreements with Kentucky public universities and several out-of-state universities. Students enrolled at WKCTC can earn either an Associate in Arts or an Associate in Science degree, while simultaneously completing the prerequisite courses for upper-level business classes. Business faculty advise the students on proper course selection.
