Exploring the science of laser technology, discovering the world of dinosaurs and creating fantastic Lego contraptions are just a few ways local youth can learn the basics of science at West Kentucky Community and Technical College (WKCTC) beginning in December.

Children ages six to twelve can learn fun and exciting science concepts by attending Friday Night Science taught by Hooked on Science’s Jason Lindsey. This event will be held in December, February and April 2014.

The class schedule is as follows:

  • December 6 – Simple Machines Galore with Legos
Students will discover the science behind simple machines through observation, reasoning, prediction, and critical thinking using Lego Education’s simple machine set.
  • December 13 – Let It Snow!
Jason Lindsey aka “Mr. Science” will make it snow. Students will also explore the wonders of Instant Snow. When water is added to this granular white powder, it instantly expands to 40 times its original volume, producing a snow-like material.
  • February 7, 2014 – Building an Arch
Students will quickly discover how teamwork is important when building a six-foot arch. They will learn how the curve of an arch is such that blocks do not experience any shear or sideways forces, only forces that are alone or parallel to the line of the curve of blocks.
  • February 21 – LEGO Science
Students will spend the evening playing with more than 6,000 LEGOs. Kids will practice their speed building by creating their best LEGO contraptions and more. Each student will receive a “FREE” mini LEGO.
  • April 4 – Laser Pegs
Students will discover the science behind light. The national award willing “Laser Pegs” is the first construction toy set in the world in which each piece feeds the next piece low voltage current. Students can design and build anything they want with “Laser Pegs.”
  • April 11 – Mighty Magnets
From making magnets seem like they are floating in the air to determining if money is magnetic, students will learn all about magnetism through hands-on experiments.
  • April 18 – Dinosaur World
From excavating a Tyrannosaurs Rex to examining a “real” dinosaur egg, students will learn all about fossils through hands-on experiments.

Friday Night Science will be held at WKCTC’s Emerging Technology Center, room 140 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. each night. The cost is $20 for each class, which includes light snacks each evening. To register, call 270-534-3335 or register online.

For more information about Friday Night Science, contact Kevin O’Neill, WKCTC continuing education coordinator at (270) 534-3215 or kevin.oneill@kctcs.edu

Ashley Wright with radiography studentsStudents in the 2014 radiography class at West Kentucky Community and Technical College recently donated $1,000 to Paducah Junior College, Inc., the foundation of WKCTC.  The money has been earmarked for fees and books for future radiography students, and was part of the money raised in the class' first Paint Me RAD Run fund-raiser in September.  "The students were ecstatic when they raised $10,000.  They had hoped to be able to raise the $6,000 they needed to pay for board review and examination fees," said David Heflin, WKCTC radiography program coordinator.  "So they wanted use the extra money to support future radiography students and also give back to the community," said Heflin. The students also donated to the local United Way, Toys-for-Tots and the Kentucky Special Olympics.

West Kentucky Community and Technical College will hold its first December graduation and nursing pinning ceremony at the Luther Carson Four Rivers Center on December 16. The nursing pinning ceremony begins at 5:00 p.m., followed by graduation at 7:30 p.m. Eight hundred and fourteen WKCTC students are candidates for graduation.

“This is the first time we’ve held a graduation in December,” said Tammy Thompson, WKCTC public relations coordinator. “We wanted to provide an opportunity for the many students who will graduate at the end of the fall 2013 semester with a chance to participate in graduation without having to return for the May 2014 ceremony.

With more than 450 nursing graduates in the last five years, WKCTC continues to help meet the needs of the healthcare industry, said Shari Gholson, WKCTC dean of nursing. “We’re excited to be having our pinning ceremony at the Carson Center this year; it will be the perfect place to better accommodate our students and their families as we honor our nursing graduates.”

Allied health students Jackie Brown of McCracken County and Kaela Burge-Beckley of Evansville, Ind., will be the student speakers for the graduation ceremony; both earning an Associate of Science of Applied Science degree. Brown will graduate from the clinical laboratory technician program and Burge-Beckley will graduate from the physical therapist assistant program. Dr. Victoria Seng, University of Tennessee at Martin associate vice chancellor of academic affairs, will be the keynote speaker for the evening. Seng is a graduate of Paducah Tilghman High School and earned an associate in nursing degree from Paducah Community College, one of the founding institutions of today’s WKCTC. Seng earned a doctorate degree in nursing from Texas Woman’s University.

This year, thirty-seven nursing students will cross the Carson Center stage to receive nursing pins in their respective programs with 37 receiving pins representing the completion of the associate degree in nursing program and 23 receiving pins representing the completion of the practical nursing program

The pinning ceremony is a symbolic welcoming of newly-graduated nurses into the nursing profession.

Joseph GarJoseph Gar, professor of biological sciences and biology program coordinator at West Kentucky Community and Technical College, recently received the NAACP Education Award.

Gar, a Paducah resident, was presented with the award at the Paducah-McCracken County NAACP Annual Freedom Fund Banquet at the Robert Cherry Civic Center last month.

The NAACP Education Committee surveyed the community to identify a postsecondary educator that has studiously served the educational needs of the community, with a focus on helping minorities. Once a year, at the annual banquet an educator is selected for the award. An educator at the primary and secondary education levels are also selected for an Education Award.

In recent years, Gar attended the African American Leadership Summit in Washington, D.C. The summit emphasized the need for community educational systems that are focused on student success and encouraged participants to demonstrate this focus by addressing the needs of the diverse student populations in their community in ways that increase graduation rates, with economic and cultural development as the ultimate goals. For this to work, collaboration between educators, families and community activists all pulling together towards a common purpose was key.

“This made me redouble my efforts to find ways to help equip the disadvantaged individuals in my community with the tools to know and understand the nature and circumstances of their lives and help them develop strategies for their self-transformation and self-empowerment,” said Gar. “I used my involvement with the Oscar Boys and Girls Club of Paducah, the McCracken County United Way, and Leadership Paducah as the venues to pursue these goals and objectives.”

Gar said when he received the Education Award, he pledged to the NAACP and the community that he would continue with the efforts to provide quality education that yields results. “We should never be afraid to take risks in the pursuit of a worthy cause.”

Congratulations to Kim Meyers for being selected as the WKCTC November Student of the Month! Kim is nontraditional student who is currently working toward her associate degree and plans to transfer to a four-year university to earn a bachelor's degree in business administration. Kim credits her husband, a retired military veteran and graduate of the WKCTC nursing program, with encouraging and motivating her to continue her education. As a work-study student in the Financial Aid Office, Kim said she is also grateful to the entire staff for their constant support and guidance, which has been instrumental in her success at WKCTC.

The Financial Aid staff also raves about Kim and her support of WKCTC students. "Kim is always willing to go above and beyond to assist students in need. In particular, she extends her full attention to our student veterans and takes special interest in their success," said Angel Rhodes, WKCTC Financial Aid Student Services Coordinator. WKCTC Financial Aid Director Nate Slaton added, "Kim's compassionate demeanor instantly links her to students, and she develops a bond that brings student back to her for new issues and questions. She is someone whose dedication and accomplishments should be recognized as the models of personal and student success." Congratulations Kim!

The exhibition, which will remain on view through February 13, features a selection of works by leading clay artists employing a contemporary approach to the art of ceramics. The art on display includes a variety of hand-built and wheel-thrown works, reflecting a broad range of approaches to working with clay.

PSAD Ceramics Professor John Hasegawa curated the exhibition. Participating artists include: Pattie Chalmers, Southern Illinois University; John Hasegawa, Paducah School of Art and Design; Jason Hess, Northern Arizona University; Robert “Boomer” Moore, West Virginia University; John Neely, Utah State University; C.J. Niehaus, Paducah School of Art and Design; Tom O’Malley, Worcester State University; Lindsay Oesterritter, Western Kentucky University; and Carol Snyder, Columbus, OH.

PSAD Dean Paul Aho acknowledges the Ceramics Invitational role as a singular regional opportunity to see cutting edge work by the medium’s leading artists. “John brings a trained and fresh eye to curating each year’s exhibition, eliciting a sense of awe and wonder among viewers,” said Aho. “Showcasing a variety of work in the field at the highest level of technical achievement and aesthetic merit, like all of PSAD invitational exhibitions, the show also serves to open the eyes of students to paths they might otherwise not see.”

Clemens Gallery is located in the Clemens Fine Arts Center on the campus of West Kentucky Community and Technical College at 4810 Alben Barkley Drive in Paducah. Gallery hours are Monday through Thursday 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. Closed Fridays.

St. Mary won the Robot Performance Award, Fulton County won the Project Award and Reidland won the Core Values Award.

The students were among 200 participants that attended the first-ever WKCTC competition; including more than 100 area elementary and middle school students comprising six to ten person FLL teams, as well as volunteers, judges and spectators. Participating students were from Calloway, Fulton, Marshall and McCracken counties, as well as St. Mary, Hopkinsville and various private schools.

The First Lego League (FLL) is an international robotics program for students designed to get young people excited about science, technology, and engineering (STEM) while teaching them valuable life skills at the same time. The competition not only promotes science, technology, engineering and mathematics disciplines, but other skills such as creativity, gracious professionalism, teamwork, positive sportsmanship and community awareness.

“We wish all our students the best of luck in the state competition,” said Mellisa Duncan, Challenger Learning Center at Paducah director and co-organizer of the WKCTC competition. “If any of the teams win in Bowling Green, they will compete at the national level; we are proud the college’s tournament was their first step to moving forward in the LEGO League competitions.”
