From Tinkering to a Career

Cory Polsgrove has always enjoyed tinkering around with cars and trucks, even as a high school student in Clinton, KY.

When he got the opportunity to go back to school, he knew exactly what career he wanted to pursue and enrolled in West Kentucky Community and Technical College’s Automotive Technology program. “I like the challenge of figuring out what the problem is on a vehicle and being able to fix it,” said Polsgrove, who hopes to one day own his own automotive shop.

Recently, Polsgrove, 35, was among several students in the automotive technology program who have honed their skills while also repairing a 1997 Acura for a local resident who plans to give the car as a gift to a relative. The estimated total labor value for repairing the car, which is being provided for free by the students, is about $1,600.

While working on the Acura is special, Polsgrove said he knows the importance of doing the best job he can do on all vehicles he works on. “The way I look at it when you are working on anyone's vehicle you are taking their life in your hands,” he said.

WKCTC automotive technologyThe Automotive Technology program was established at WKCTC in August 2011. This year will mark the first graduating class to complete the two-year program, said Bob Gunn, instructor and program coordinator. “The automotive repair field is great for anyone wanting a different scenario at work each day, especially if they have formal training in several repair areas,” Gunn said. “A person can never get bored in the automotive field, because the product is so broad. For example one day the work may all be pickups and the next day all small economy cars.”

According to the Federal Bureau of Labor, automotive technicians make on average about $ 17.00 dollars an hour. “It may take a graduate a few years to achieve this average,” Gunn said. “However formal education should help to increase the wage potential and qualify someone to advance into a management position if desired.”

Polsgrove said automotive technicians need to have good diagnostic skills, because the cost of parts is getting higher every day. “So you want to know for sure that the parts you are putting on are going to fix the problem,” he said.

Polsgrove said the program at the Skilled Craft Training Center was perfect for his needs. “The program at WKCTC has state of the art equipment and a very knowledgeable instructor. It is close to home so I didn't have to relocate my family to be able to attend,” he said.

Polsgrove, who is raising two young boys with his wife, Trisha, expects to complete an Associate in Applied Science degree in automotive technology later this year.

Enrollment is underway for the automotive technology program. For more information about contact Bob Gunn at 270-856-2410 or via e-mail at robert.gunn@kctcs.edu.

Lindsey Wilson College graduate Pam Sloan; Dawn Cleary, Lindsey Wilson College enrollment coordinator; Racquel Strickland and Lindsey Wall, both Lindsey Wilson College graduates; and Dr. Jody Giles, resident faculty supervisor and assistant professor at Lindsey Wilson College Pam Sloan’s dream of starting a counseling practice came a step closer to becoming reality when the Barlow resident recently completed the Lindsey Wilson College master’s degree program at West Kentucky Community and Technical College.

Sloan was one of three students who participated in an April 18 pinning ceremony held for the first time at WKCTC.  Dawn Cleary, Lindsey Wilson enrollment coordinator, said the college usually hosts pinning ceremonies at the end of the year at the regional campus in Hopkinsville to recognize those students who complete the counseling and human services program. It was the first time since the Columbia-based liberal arts college began offering classes at WKCTC that a Lindsey Wilson College pinning ceremony was held on the Paducah campus.

Sloan, Lindsey Wall of Marshall County and Racquel Strickland of Radcliff have all completed master’s degrees in counseling. All of the students either earned an associate’s degree at WKCTC or took some courses at WKCTC before enrolling at Lindsey Wilson.

“These three ladies completed mid year, and we wanted to have a special service for them,” Cleary said.

Sloan, who hopes to start a practice in Ballard County, said she wouldn’t have pursued her degree if Lindsey Wilson had not been offered their program at WKCTC.  “It was wonderful,” she said. “I have learned so much and I feel prepared.”

Since partnering with WKCTC in 2010 to offer local students the opportunity to earn a bachelor’s or master’s degree, Lindsey Wilson College has had 10 undergraduate and five graduate students to complete their degree program in counseling and human development. In addition to its academic programs, Lindsey Wilson offers complete counseling services in WKCTC’s Anderson Technology Building to the college’s faculty, staff and students.

WKCTC officials said they are pleased with the strong partnership with Lindsey Wilson. “They provide a Bachelor of Arts degree in human services and counseling, and a Master’s of Education in counseling and human development.  This is an excellent opportunity for our students to earn these degrees in our local area,” said Dr. Tena Payne, vice president of academic affairs.

“These students have high completion rates, are getting jobs, and are meeting the needs of our community by providing both human services and the benefits of counseling services.”

Founded in 1903, Lindsey Wilson is a liberal arts college affiliated with the Kentucky Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church. The college has community campus partnerships with 21 community and technical colleges in Kentucky, Ohio, Virginia and West Virginia.

Wall graduated from WKCTC in 2007 with an Associate in Arts degree. “Lindsey Wilson College’s dedication to excellence in education has left me feeling prepared to enter the world of professional counseling,” she said.

Racquel Strickland, who also received her Associate in Arts degree from West Kentucky in 2009, said she enjoyed the hands-on opportunities provided by Lindsey Wilson’s program thanks to the partnership with West Kentucky.

"My experience through this master's program has been enriching personally,” Strickland said.  “Most importantly though, I have grown professionally because of the professors at Lindsey Wilson College.  We have been blessed to be taught by some of the key leaders in Kentucky's counseling arena.  The opportunity has been priceless."

Lindsey Wilson’s graduate program is accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs, which is the accreditation arm of the American Counseling Association. For more information, contact Dawn Cleary  (270) 534-3434.

Veteran Kevin Quinn of Livingston County is one of two students at West Kentucky Community and Technical College to be named to the 2013 All-KCTCS Academic Team.

Quinn is among 91 students who will be recognized at WKCTC’s honors ceremony Monday, May 13 at 6 pm.in the Clemens Fine Arts Center.

The All-KCTCS Academic Team is sponsored by the Kentucky Community and Technical College System and recognizes outstanding students of community and technical colleges. The selected students successfully represent high achievement in the areas of scholarship, service and leadership.
“Being selected to the All-KCTCS Academic Team is the cherry on top of a phenomenal year,” Quinn said. “I just can't believe I was selected for being myself.”

For 23 years, Quinn worked on nearly every type of aircraft the Air Force owned, got to travel and live all over the world with his wife and children. But when he retired in 2007, another life journey began. Struggling to find a job where he could use the skills he learned in the military, Quinn got a job at Wal-Mart to support his family. He eventually found the kind of job he looking for; he built business jets at Hawker Beechcraft near his home in Colorado. But Quinn had to begin again when he was laid-off following the effects of the economic downturn on the aircraft company.

The possibility of working with friends brought Quinn and his family to Paducah. While looking for work, he spent time on his hobbies; his favorite being anything computer related. “In the fall of 2011, I summoned all my courage and started the Information Technology program at WKCTC, “ Quinn said. ”I wasn’t a great student in high school and that was two decades ago, so I was more than a little apprehensive about starting college. But I’ve taken a lot of great classes, been taught by incredible professors and learned far more than I ever expected.”

During an internship at Genesis Health Technologies, a new Paducah company that just launched a revolutionary blood glucose meter, Quinn worked on their web portal and their online database. He has now been offered a full-time position with the company. “I didn’t know where this current journey would lead when I started, but I sure am glad I had the courage to begin and I can’t wait to see where it goes.”
Quinn will receive the Information Technology Outstanding Student Award and be recognized for the Who's Who Among Students in American Junior Colleges at the honors ceremony. The following Livingston County residents will also receive honors on May 13.

  • Jeffery Abel - Information Technology Outstanding Student Award; Who's Who Among Students in American Junior Colleges
  • Amber Biggers - Who's Who Among Students in American Junior Colleges
  • Kathern Hayes - Advanced Nursing Assistant Honor Award
  • Destiny Lee - West Kentucky College Academy Student Achievement Award
  • Kristie Stokes - R.N. Nightingale Award
  • Joseph Wood - Excellence in Social Science
  • Quinn and Graves County resident, Roy Henley, also an All-KCTCS Academic Team member, will be student speakers at the college’s graduation ceremonies on May 14 at the Luther F. Carson Four Rivers Center.

Roy Henley -- April Student of the Month

Roy Henley, a WKCTC non-traditional student, has been selected as student of the month for April. Roy is a non-traditional student who worked at the Goodyear Tire Plant for 13 years prior to its closing. He then chose to take this life event as an opportunity to return to school and pursue a lifelong dream of being a teacher.  His "bump in the road" of losing a good job was the turning point to allow him to pursue his dream; and he has done a superb job in doing that!

Roy has 4.0 GPA which he works hard to maintain. He is a leader on campus, as well as a member of the All-KCTCS Academic, which provides him the opportunity to be a student speaker at this year's graduation. Roy is also a member of Phi Theta Kappa, TRIO Student Support Services, and the New Beginnings Adult Support Group. In addition, he serves in the community as a Cub Scout leader, church youth leader, football coach, a member of two Mayfield city boards , and is a thespian performer at the Mayfield's Purchase Players.

Roy Henley represents and inspires the non-traditional students on our campus to continue in their pursuit of higher education. Roy does all this, but will tell you his first priority is his family— five children, and supportive wife, Laura, who is a student herself in the RN Program here at WKCTC. Congratulations Roy!!

Summer Holland Named Top KCTCS Staff Member

Summer Holland of Benton didn’t cry when she was recently recognized by the Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS) as the 2013 top support staff award recipient.

“I just shook,” said Holland, an administrative assistant for the Advising Center at West Kentucky Community and Technical College. “That’s all I could do. I just shook. I couldn’t believe it.”

Holland, the daughter of Tina Dunn of Benton and Ed Wiggins of Mayfield, was among 50 KCTCS faculty and staff recognized for their leadership and significant achievements at an awards ceremony held May 20, at the Northern Kentucky Convention Center in Covington.

Statewide honors went to Holland and two others individuals who not only supported their colleges, but also the entire System. In addition to Holland, Dr. Gerald Napoles, chief academic affairs officer at Southcentral Kentucky Community and Technical College, was honored as the Support Staff Award of Excellence recipient. Michael Nyagol, assistant professor of mathematics at Hazard Community and Technical College, was honored as the Faculty Award of Excellence recipient.

Each of the 16 KCTCS colleges selected an outstanding administrative staff member, support staff member and faculty member. Two individuals (one support staff and one administrative staff) from the KCTCS System office were also honored.  WKCTC also nominated Jennifer Strout of Mayfield, a business affairs specialist, in the administrative staff category, and Deborah Smith of Paducah, director of advising and assessment, was WKCTC's nominee in the faculty category.

A committee of their peers chose Holland, Napoles and Nyagol for the statewide honors. Each received $1,000 to be used for the professional development experience of their choice. “KCTCS is fortunate to have so many hardworking, dedicated employees across the state with extraordinary talents and skills,” said KCTCS President Michael B. McCall.

SummerHolland3Both faculty and staff honorees were nominated by their college for their innovative and significant achievements, as well as service to students and their communities. In WKCTC’s nomination, Holland was described as “an exemplary staff member” whose work lead to better student service in the Master Advising Center, which was recently recognized by the American Association of Community Colleges as an exemplary program.

Holland, a 1998 Marshall County High School graduate, started working at WKCTC in September 2008. She and her husband, Virgil, who is a welding instructor at WKCTC, are also poultry farmers with more than 60,000 chickens.  In addition, the Hollands have three children, aged 8, 4 and 1.

Balancing a family, a farm and a full-time job can be tough, but the 32-year-old Holland has a harder time figuring out what makes her a top support staff member.  In fact, she credits others with much of her success.

“I don’t feel like I’ve done anything that’s extraordinary,” Holland said.  “I have a wonderful group of people to work with and I have lots of support from my family. Everybody just comes together. We all work together.”
