Paducah, KY (June 3, 2016) – A graduation ceremony for McCracken and Graves County GED recipients will be held at West Kentucky Community and Technical College June 9. Friends and family are invited to attend the ceremony at 6 p.m. in the Crounse Hall.

Michael Bolin of Arlington, Ky., just celebrated his 37th birthday and recently got married, but he has more to celebrate. Bolin is celebrating his participation in the GED graduation next week, a milestone that has led to a good paying job to support himself and his new bride.

“I very grateful for this program (GED) because it helped me better myself and get a better job,” said Bolin.

Now working at Southern Coal Handling Services’ Calvert City Terminal, Bolin credits the WKCTC Adult Learning Center for encouraging him to also earn the National Career Readiness Certificate (NCRC) in addition to his GED, which he said was the key in being hired.

“I actually earned my GED and the NCRC certificate in December 2015 and was hired on Calvert City Terminal at the first of the year. Many companies now require that certification, and that is one reason I got the job.”

Bolln is now considering his next move in his educational journey by enrolling at WKCTC this fall to major in either welding or industrial maintenance.

A reception will be held following the June 9 GED graduation when friends and family can celebrate with Michael and the other 53 graduates who are eligible to participate in the ceremony.

For more information about the WKCTC Adult Learning Centers, call (270) 534-3451 for the McCracken County program on WKCTC’s campus or (270) 856-2423 for the Graves County program at the college’s Skilled Craft Training Center in Hickory.

Public Invited to Attend Signing for New WKCTC Book

Paducah, KY (June 27, 2016) – Mayfield native Janett Blythe has written a new book documenting West Kentucky Community and Technical College’s extraordinary transformation over the past 16 years.

The public is invited to attend the book signing with Blythe, WKCTC’s marketing and public relations director, Thursday, July 7 from 4 – 6 p.m. at Paducah School of Art and Design’s (PSAD) 2D and Graphic Design Building, located at 905 Harrison Street.

During the book signing to be held in PSAD’s Ford Art Gallery, the public is also invited to meet WKCTC’s interim president, Dr. Charles Chrestman.

West Kentucky Community and Technical College: Formative Years (2000 - 2016), Blythe’s third book, details the college’s process of redesigning, reinventing and resetting itself. Fifteen years later, and for a third time, WKCTC was named by the prestigious Aspen Institute as one of the top community colleges in the nation.

This book is a pictorial history that provides a riveting glimpse of the college’s remarkable journey from newly consolidated college to one of the best community colleges in the nation. The limited-edition book features more than 200 photographs celebrating the college’s upward strides, as well as its continuing transformation.

Her first book, My West Kentucky: A History of West Kentucky Technical College, 1909 – 1999, was published in June 2000 and helped raised more than $4,000 for a scholarship fund at the college in memory of her brothers, Donald, a WKCTC surgical technology graduate, and Kevin. A second book, Upward Stride: A Pictorial History of West Kentucky Community and Technical College, released in 2008 described the history of both West Kentucky Technical College and Paducah Community College and the beginnings of the consolidated West Kentucky Community and Technical College.

"After I wrote Upward Stride, I really didn't think we would write another history about the college, but as I looked back at what has been accomplished at this college in such a short amount of time, it became obvious to me how important it was to share this story,” said Blythe.

The college’s leadership, faculty, staff and students can be so proud of what has been accomplished at West Kentucky but so can this entire community, Blythe added.

“It really has been an inspirational journey for West Kentucky. I hope this book inspires others as much as this journey has inspired me. This is not just a story about a college's success. It's about a community's success.”

Blythe graduated from George C. Marshall High School in Ankara, Turkey, before gaining a bachelor's degree from Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Va. in 1983. She earned her master's degree in journalism and communication from the University of Florida in 1985. Blythe was an education reporter and columnist for the Paducah Sun before accepting her current position at WKCTC in 1993.

Robins, student affairs assistant III in WKCTC’s registrar’s office, was first nominated to represent WKCTC at the college level in April of this year, and received the overall support staff system honor this week.

“I was surprised to win at the college level, but to win this award from across the system, it’s an accomplishment that reflects back to WKCTC. I am very proud of that; it’s (WKCTC) where my heart is,” Robins said on learning of her win today.

Each of 16 KCTCS colleges and the system office nominates one administrative member, one faculty member, and one staff member for the award by their fellow college employees.  One faculty member, one administrative member, and one staff member from the 48 people are then nominated within the KCTCS system as the top staff and faculty representatives in their categories.

Working at the college for more than 20 years, Robins not only supports WKCTC within the registrar's office but also by volunteering for nearly every event and activity on campus. She is also an active volunteer throughout the community. Robins also received the 2016 Ladd Mathis Award for her volunteer work with the United Way of Paducah-McCracken County - the highest form of recognition the United Way can give to an outstanding community member.

"Nancy is the most student-friendly individual that many of us have ever worked with, and she works long hours to make sure our students get what they need,” said Dr. Tena Payne, WKCTC vice president of academic affairs. “Her active involvement and support for our community mirrors what she does on our campus.”

WKCTC Registrar Jessica Puffenbarger agreed. “We are extremely proud of Nancy, and we’re blessed she is part of WKCTC and the registrar’s office team."

Paducah, Kentucky (July 27, 2016) – A rededication and open house of West Kentucky Community and Technical College’s Mary Ellen Thompson Health Education Center will be held August 12 from 1-3 p.m. in the Anderson Technical Building with remarks beginning at 1:30 p.m.

The center was first opened in 2006 in Paducah’s Elmwood Court and named for long-time community advocate and Superior Care Home founder, Mary Ellen Thompson. It is being rededicated in honor of Thompson and opened on the second floor of the college’s Anderson building.

“Being on campus, our students will have access to all campus services, as well as being able to integrate into the college community and participate in college events,” said Elizabeth Durham, WKCTC nurse aid program coordinator. “It will be easier to schedule classes with no commuting necessary, and they will have access to open computer labs...and have easier access to the faculty for advising and assistance as needed.”

The center will continue to house WKCTC’s certified nursing assistant program and will have state-of-the-art equipment to enhance both teaching and learning.  The design of the center will allow for more hands-on education and practice for all students in the program. "Serving not only as an education center, but also as a regional testing center, the center will test all our regional high schools and technical schools in addition to the various nursing facilities that provide their own nursing assistant education," Durham said.

The open house and rededication of the Mary Ellen Thompson Health Education Center is free and open to the public, however the college asks individuals to send RSVP to Blair Travis by August 10 at blair.travis@kctcs.edu or (270) 534-3083.
