Summer Camp Fun at WKCTC

Paducah, Kentucky (June 2, 2016) – Need something for your kids to do this summer? West Kentucky Community and Technical College will offer a variety of weeklong summer camps for area youth. The camps are filling up quickly so early registration is encouraged.
 
The camps are designed for students from first through twelfth grade will be held in various buildings on the WKCTC campus. Students will have the opportunity to explore exciting experiences with basketball, computers, robotics, drama and science, engineering, technology and mathematics (STEM).
 
Creative Exploration Drama Camp
June 13 – 17, 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Student Center/Clemens Theatre
Age: Rising Grades 6 – 12

Students will explore their creative side while being taught the elements of play production and performance. Participants will learn to be star actors, help design and build the sets for two shows, as well as discover their artistic side in art class. The plays developed during the week will be performed Friday evening June 17. Cost: $110; includes breakfast, lunch and a snack.
 
LEGO EV3 Robotics
June 13 – 17, 8 a.m – 4 p.m.
Emerging Technology Center
Age: Rising Grades 5 – 6

Students will learn about and master the latest and most powerful robotics system created by LEGO’s EV3. They will be introduced to computer science through the Guided User Interface programming environment, which will be crucial to students creating human like behavior in their mobile robotic creations. Students will choose a special interactive model for show-and-tell on the last day of camp.
Cost: $235; includes breakfast, lunch and a snack.
 
No Boys Allowed Camp
June 20 – 24 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Allied Health Building
Age: Rising Grades 7 – 12

This camp is designed to give middle school girls an opportunity to explore engineering and scientific fields through demonstrations, classroom, presentations, hands-on activities, field trips, contacts with professionals and more in the STEM disciplines. Cost: $110; includes breakfast, lunch and a snack.
 
Basketball Camps (four-day camp)
June 20 – 23
8:30 a.m. – noon, Age: Grades 2 – 5
1 – 4:30 p.m., Age: Grades 6 – 8

These fundamental camps for boys and girls teach the basics of the game of basketball, both offensively and defensively. Different levels of instruction will be offered based on prior experience. These fun, interactive camps will allow young athletes to train and learn from WKCTC’s collegiate athletes. Cost: $65 for each session.
 
Tynker with Coding
June 13 – 17, 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Emerging Technology Center
Age: Rising Grades 7 – 8

Students will develop basic skills in computer science through virtual gaming platform using the educational website Tynker.com. Students will create characters, solve puzzles, and create games while learning the seven basic tools computer coding. Cost: $235; includes breakfast, lunch and a snack.
 
WeDo LEGO Robotics
June 20 – 24, 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Emerging Technology Center
Age: Rising Grades 1-2

This camp challenges young students to build and program an interactive robotic model while providing age appropriate visual instruction. LEGO lovers will learn to build birds, soccer players, giants, planes and more. A show-and-tell for family and friends will be on the last day of camp.  Cost: $235; includes breakfast, lunch and a snack.
 
LEGO Simple Machines
June 20 – 24, 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Emerging Technology Center
Age: Rising Grades 3 – 4

This camp will provide students experiences that will enlighten them on the basics of machines by building, manipulating and testing LEGO models. Students will learn foundational engineering principles in motivating the environment of LEGOs. LEGO lovers will create end-loaders, forklifts, fishing poles, cars and more. Cost: $235; includes breakfast, lunch and a snack.
 
The Magic of Minecraft
June 27 – July 1, 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Emerging Technology Center
Age: Rising Grades 5 – 8

Minecraft is a web-based education experience that has been compared to a virtual LEGO environment. This offering will cover topics such as computer programming with math and science and will provide a creative outlet for students. Sessions meet six consecutive Monday afternoons. A light snack is provided at each session. Cost: $235; includes breakfast, lunch and a snack.
 
Preregistration is required for all classes and early registration is encouraged. The registration deadline is seven days prior to class starting date. Classes may be cancelled due to lack of enrollment.
