Heath Middle School science teacher Brandy Roberts was one of three teachers across the country recently named 2014 Teacher of the Year Award by the Challenger Center for Space Science Education.
The 2014 Turner Wiley Teacher of Year Award recognizes teachers who continually demonstrate an ability to excite students about science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) subjects, connect classroom activities with the Challenger Center experience, and make a positive impact on their local Challenger Learning Center.
Center directors from across the U.S, Canada, U.K. and South Korea nominated teachers for the esteemed award.
Challenger Learning Center at Paducah (CLC) staff nominated Roberts.
“Ms. Roberts is a strong supporter of the center,” said CLC Director Mellisa Duncah. “She sees the value of the program for her students and always has them well prepared. She is an excellent science teacher!”
Each recipient received a congratulatory letter and signed book from the Challenger Center Founding Chair Dr. June Scobee Rodgers and a presentation of a historical, limited edition Apollo 8 medallion produced by NASA.
The award is named for the late Turner N. Wiley, a supporter of Challenger Center and former Chief of NASA’s Communication Branch for Engineering at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland.
Other award winners include Dan Curcio, K-eighth grade teacher at The Community School in Teaneck, N.J. and Irene Klay, sixth grade science teacher at Fairview Middle School in Tallahassee, Fla.
The Challenger Learning Center at Paducah, located on the campus of West Kentucky Community and Technical College, is one in a network of over 45 centers worldwide, and is the result of a partnership between the college and Paducah Junior College, Inc., the foundation of WKCTC.
