The generation of brave men and women who fought in the great conflict of World War II, most now in their 80s and 90s, saw moments of triumph, moments of bitter agony, and some moments that might be considered a bit strange. A free presentation at West Kentucky Community and Technical College on Veterans Day will discuss some of those unique events.

“Good, Bad, and Bizarre Images of The Good War” will be held on November 11 at 11:00 a.m. in Matheson Library. The presentation is free and open to the public.

From Hitler's birthday cake and Donald Duck's patriotic payment of taxes to Rosie the Riveter and the grisly discoveries about human nature both at home and abroad, World War II ran the gamut of emotions, said Brent Taylor, WKCTC history assistant professor.

Taylor said Monday’s presentation will include images and video that will provide a stimulating visual connection to America's Greatest Generation and share the experiences of World War II as a part of America’s common heritage.

“The sad reality is that members of the Greatest Generation will not always be with us, so it is vitally important to connect with them while they are, and to lay the groundwork for a time when we can no longer draw on them to understand what it was like to face the events of the mid-20th century,” Taylor said.

Prior to the WWII presentation, the WKCTC Office of Veterans Services will host an open house to share information about available services for veterans of the college and the region.  Visitors can come by the Anderson Technical Building, room 113 between 8:30 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. before going to Matheson Library for the presentation. Coffee and donuts will be served.
